You have been tying the same vine to the same ash pole since the spring your father's hands began to shake. The stems want to climb anywhere but where you point them, so you bind them with flax strips, one loop at a time, and the shoots curl back against your knuckles as if they were arguing. Below you the terraces run down toward the grey sea, and the wind off the bay smells of salt and crushed thyme.

The purple flowers come late this year, small and hard as stars, and the neighbours say a vine that flowers out of season is calling someone home. You do not believe them. You believe in pruning knives and the patience of wood. Still, when the tendrils reach the lintel of the stone shed, you find yourself leaving one curl loose, a spiral that turns back on itself like a snail's shell, because your mother used to say a vine should always have somewhere to return to.

Then the carter from Stabiae comes up the track with news and a sack of lentils, and he stops to look at the pole. He says the vine is growing up the wrong side of the house. You tell him the wrong side is only a matter of where the sun happens to be. He laughs, and you keep working.

By dusk the loose spiral has caught a breeze and swings out over the path. You leave it there, unbound, for whoever comes walking up the hill next.
