Hexagon and blossom branch on ribs
Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A black fine line tattoo shows a hexagon outlined with thin branching twigs, with three small five-petal flowers sitting at its corners and along a sprig that rises upward. The lines are even and delicate, with no shading, and the design is set against plain, pale skin. The photo is taken at an angle with a soft focus and the tattoo sits in the centre of the frame.

Mr Ashdown kept the benzene model on his desk the way other men kept a dog, and on wet Thursdays he let me dust it. Six carbon rings wired together, the sticks painted cream, the whole thing hung on a string above the blackboard like a chandelier that had given up on being one. Nobody at Thornbury Grammar understood it except him and the vicar's daughter, and she only pretended to because she was bored.

That spring the hawthorn came out early along the cutting, but the sprig I brought in one Monday was cherry, pinched from behind the gasworks wall. I stood it in a jam jar by the sink and Mr Ashdown looked at it for a long time. He said the ring wanted decorating. He said carbon was a generous element, always willing to hold something on its arms, and that a molecule was only a shape until somebody gave it a reason to grow.
We spent the dinner hours that May bending copper wire into twigs and pinning blossom to them with dabs of Bostik. By June the model had three pink flowers at its corners and a branch climbing out of the ring toward the window light. The inspector came in July, tutted at the bunting, then stood under the thing for a full minute with his hands behind his back.
He asked who had made it. Mr Ashdown said the children had, and I kept my eyes on the chalk tray. The inspector nodded slowly and wrote something down. That night I climbed onto the stool and touched one flower, and it swung, and it did not fall.
