Dandelion seeds and script quote on ribs
Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A close side view of a torso showing a black tattoo of a dandelion with seeds drifting away on the breeze, with the stems and seed heads drawn in delicate linework. Cursive script runs diagonally beside the design, reading "I want adventure in the great wide somewhere". The ink appears to be solid black with soft grey shading on the dandelion head, set against warm skin and a pale top and denim jeans.

She had a rule. You blew a clock once, you counted the puffs until it was bare, and whatever hour the last seed left was the hour you'd be leaving. Her mother had taught her that, and her mother had been wrong about most things, so Nell trusted it less than she trusted the wind.
One night the wind came up off the canal smelling of diesel and wet coal, and it took every seed she had blown in a single breath. She stood with her cheeks puffed and nothing in her hands but a bare green stalk. A bus went past with a sign that said Somewhere, which she took as an insult.
She went home and wrote on the back of a betting slip: I want adventure in the great wide somewhere. Then she pinned it above the sink, where the chip fat hung in the air, and went to bed. In the morning the slip was gone, and so was she, though the chip shop man swore he had seen her on the 9.40 to Hull, cheeks still puffed, holding a single seed like a ticket.
