Dandelion and birds with quote on shoulder
Fine line · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A dandelion seed head sits on the shoulder blade and sends a trail of small bird silhouettes and seed heads up across the upper back. The words Every breath is a second chance are written in thin black script that runs between the birds and the flower. The ink is almost entirely black and grey, shown against soft, even indoor light with the shoulder filling most of the frame.

Dear Maud,

The wind off the Cromer cliffs has been taking everything this week. Mr Pellow lost his hat over the wall, two gulls got into the bread bin, and yesterday the whole seed head of the dandelion clock by the lifeboat slip simply lifted and went, a grey puff drifting off towards Norfolk like it had somewhere better to be. I stood there with my shopping and laughed like a fool, and old Grace Tulley told me I was letting the luck out of the village. I told her luck was a thing you blew on yourself.
You'll remember the sparrows on the chapel roof, how we used to count them on Sundays instead of listening to the sermon. Well, there are dozens now, lifting off the harbour wall in a line, and every time one peels away from the rest I think of what you said at the station, that every breath is a second chance and we only ever spend the first one. I've started writing it on the back of the tide tables so I don't lose it.
Come in June. Bring the blue cardigan you left on my hook. I'll put the kettle on and we can sit on the wall and watch the seeds go out over the water, and I will try, honestly, to catch one for you before it reaches France.
All my love, Ivy
