Dandelion seeds turning into birds on upper back

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A dandelion head sits at the lower right of the design, with its seeds drifting up and across the skin and turning into small silhouetted birds in flight. The linework is fine and the ink is solid black with no shading or colour. The tattoo runs diagonally across a soft-focus, warm-toned back, with the dark edge of a shadow filling the upper right corner.

The grass between the Bramley rows has gone to seed by the last week of August, and your brother Dev is lying flat on his stomach by the wall, blowing at a dandelion clock as though he could tell the time from it. You are eleven and too old for this, which is why you kneel down beside him anyway, brushing wasp-bitten windfalls out of the stubble with the side of your hand.

Grandad Ifor says every seed that leaves the head carries a bird off with it, provided you let it go far enough before you wish. He says this while he is up a ladder pruning, so you never know whether he is joking. Dev believes him. You have spent the whole summer watching the swifts scream over the top field at dusk, and you have decided they are the seeds that got away.

The last clock by the gate is the biggest you have seen. You pick it carefully, hold it up against the low sun, and count the seeds as they lift on a warm breath from the valley: nineteen, then twenty, then one more that snags on your sleeve. Dev says that is cheating. You tell him to watch the ridge instead.

You open your hand. The seeds peel off one by one and drift over the hedge, and for a moment they are only seeds, catching the light like dust in a barn. Then one dips, flicks, and turns sharp against the sky, and then another, until a whole ragged line of small dark wings is climbing above the Bramleys. Dev counts them out loud and loses track at eleven. Ifor, somewhere up his ladder, does not look down.
