Three small birds in flight on collarbone
Fine line · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
Three small black silhouette birds, likely swallows, are spaced diagonally across the upper chest near the collarbone. The linework is simple and solid black with no visible shading, and the tattoo is the only colour in the image against the skin tone, pink jumper and silver ring. The close, slightly angled framing keeps the birds centred with the hand and sweater at the lower right.

The swallows come down to the orchard before the first Bramley is picked, and you stand at the foot of the ladder counting them the way your mother taught you, one finger at a time. Three go over the wall by the damson rows. Three, you tell yourself, is a good number for a summer that has been mostly rain. Behind you the sheds smell of wet sacking and diesel, and Dan from the next farm is whistling something you can't quite place.

By late August the nets are off the plums and the wasps have found the windfalls under the Cox trees. You have promised Nell, who keeps the books in the farmhouse kitchen, that you will be finished before dark. She reads the weather on the back of the calendar and says the birds know before the glass does. You have never believed her, but you watch the sky anyway, the way she does, with one hand flat above your eyes.
On the last evening the swallows gather on the telegraph wire above the lane, dozens of them, restless as a pencil line. You carry the crate to the cart and look up, and three break from the wire and drop low over the hedge, wings cut sharp against the orange sky. They don't circle back. Nell is already at the gate with the lamp lit, and she doesn't ask what you saw.
You set the crate down beside her boots and say, "They've gone south." She shrugs, lifts the lamp, and says the orchard will still be here when they come back. That is the sort of promise she makes, and you carry it home in your coat pocket like a windfall you aren't quite ready to eat.
