Nell had counted the seeds twice before the ferry horn went, eleven clocks gone grey on the sill of the harbour office, and she still hadn't decided whether to tell Tom the boat was late. She took the dandelion clocks down to the wall anyway. The wind came off the water hard and sideways, the way it did in March, and she held the stalks out and let go. The seeds lifted in a loose trail over the stone, each one a small pale argument with gravity, and she thought of the card Tom had left under the tea caddy the morning he sailed for the Dogger Bank. He had written it like a joke, the letters leaning on one another as if they were tired: whatever will be, will be.
The last seed caught the light and sailed out past the moored dinghies toward the grey bulk of the Carrick Rock. Nell watched it until she could no longer tell it from the spray. Then the ferry's horn sounded from behind the breakwater, long and low, and she realised she had stopped counting.
