Heart of musical notes and treble clef

Black and grey · Flash

A black line drawing of a heart shape made from a curving stave, a treble clef at its base and several musical notes, including quavers and crotchets, scattered along the lines. The linework is smooth and of even weight, with solid note heads and no shading. The design is centred on a plain white background with no colour.

Ada Pell found the first sheet caught in the privet by the bowling green, soaked and folded in quarters, the staves running the wrong way for any hymn she knew. She smoothed it across her knee and hummed the bass line before she could stop herself.

After that there was another every morning. Sheets pegged to the park railings, a crotchet tucked into the dahlia bed, a treble clef cut from card and wedged under the bench by the bandstand. Ada kept them in a Huntley and Palmers tin in the groundsman's shed, because Mr Thorne, the park manager, would only have bagged them for the bins. She sorted them by tune rather than date, and over three weeks she worked out that they made one melody, which curled back on itself into a heart whenever she laid the sheets end to end.

She took the tin to the Wednesday practice at St Agnes, where a young organist called Dev Okafor played the top line while she sang the rest under her breath. The notes sat wrong for one bar, then right. Dev tapped the last page with his finger. "Whoever wrote this was writing to somebody who could sing it back."

That evening Ada went to the park with a pencil and wrote the final bar on the back of the last sheet, then pegged it to the railings where the first had been found. By morning it had gone, and in its place someone had left a fresh sheet in a looser hand, with one word at the bottom: Again.
