Treble clef and music notes design
Black and grey · Flash
A large treble clef runs down the centre of the image, with a solid note head at its lower curl and several beamed and single music notes falling beneath it. Fine stippled dots drift around the clef and notes, suggesting motion or sparkle. The image is entirely black and grey on white, with bold solid shapes for the clef and notes and softer, blurred dots for the spray effect.

Come closer, the fire is low and I will not shout over the wind. My grandmother's grandmother used to say that the notes of a song do not die when the singer stops. They fall. They drift down through the rafters like soot and settle in the cracks of the floor, waiting for someone patient enough to sweep them up.

There was a cooper in our valley named Tobiah Rell, who could not carry a tune across a ploughed field. Every evening he would sit on the mill step and hum at the river, and every evening the river hummed back in a voice so low it made his teeth ache. One autumn he decided he would learn to read the music that lived in the water, so he walked to the old abbey where the monks kept their pages of marked lines and curled little heads, and he begged the cantor for lessons.
The cantor was a sour man with ink on his thumbs. He drew a great looping sign at the head of the stave, the one that curls like a hook around a fish, and said, here is the key that tells the whole song where it lives. Tobiah laughed and said that was a silly shape for a key. The cantor smiled for the first time that year and said, then go and find the note it turns around.
Tobiah found it in the spring, when the river ran high and a single black dot tumbled from the clef and hung in the spray above the weir. He caught it in his cupped hands, and it was warm, and when he opened his fingers it had become a small bird that sang the whole valley awake. He never learned to read music. He did not need to. He only ever had to listen for where the notes fell.
