In the year the mill wheels stopped, Tobin Ashe was sent up the Hollow Stair with a lantern and a list. His aunt had kept the noon light in a glass jar on the kitchen shelf since the spring, and the jar had gone grey at the bottom. Nobody in Carrow Reach could say where the rest of the day had gone. The old people said it had slipped out through the cracks in the sky, the way milk goes through a sieve.

At the top of the stair was a door with no lock, and behind it a room of white stone where a woman sat at a loom. She did not look up. She was weaving something thin and bright, a line of gold that went in and out of the grey. 'You've come for the day,' she said. 'Everyone does. Sit down, boy, and don't speak until the shuttle stops.'
He sat. The shuttle went back and forth. His eyes grew heavy, the way they do after a long walk, and the stone room went soft at the edges. When he woke the lantern had gone out and the room was full of sun, lying on the floor in slow gold squares. 'It was never lost,' the woman said. 'It only drifts off when folk are too busy to notice it. Take this, and tell them the day dreams where no one is watching.'
Tobin walked back down with the golden thread wound round his wrist. At the glassworks he took a pot of black ink and a fine brush and wrote the words along the sill of his aunt's window, plainly, the way the priest wrote names in the register. Day Dream, he wrote. By noon the light came through the letters and lay on the table in small, careful shapes, and his aunt, who had never trusted a dream, left the shutters open all afternoon.
