The tattoo is on the outside of a bare ankle and reads IT'S ALL OKAY in two lines of hand-drawn black capitals. An outlined heart sits to the right of the words, and a grey curved linework shape sits to the left. The photo is in colour, but the ink is black and grey against pale skin, with the subject shown in black jeans and black and white trainers on a speckled floor.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit nearer, the fire only warms the one side of you. There was a keeper at Scarrow Point who wrote his messages on the backs of old tide tables, because paper was dear and the tables were no use to anyone once the month had turned. Every winter the boats went out past the Skerrow, and every winter a few did not come back, so the women of the village would climb the cliff path to stand at the lamp-room gate and stare at the light going round and round, as if it might say something.

So he pinned a note to the gate each evening. Kettle's on. Wind backing west, no harm in it. A boy called Eddie Parr came up one blustery night with his gran's eggs and read them out loud for his little sister, who could not read yet and did not trust a thing she could not hear. That night the note was two lines in square pencil capitals, IT'S ALL on top and OKAY underneath, with a small heart drawn beside them, the kind of heart you draw when you have run out of things to say and do not want to stop.

Eddie asked the keeper why the words were split. The keeper said the sea needed room to breathe. Eddie thought that the daftest thing he had ever heard, and carried the note home in his coat anyway, which was the whole point.

Years on, when Eddie was keeper himself, a lad came up the path shaking with cold and crying without any noise. Eddie took a tide table from his drawer, wrote the same two lines in the same square pencil, and pinned it to the gate. Then he went back inside and put the kettle on.
