Adventure lettering on a lower leg

Lettering · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A small black tattoo of the word adventure is set in a thin, upright serif typeface and runs vertically along the outer lower leg. The ink is solid black with no shading, and the lines are crisp against the skin. The photograph is taken from above with a dark, softly blurred background, and a denim hem sits at the top of the frame beside a red cord and gold bangle at the ankle.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The last of the lodgers had gone down to the harbour before breakfast, and Nell Tregarthen was still on her knees in the back room of the print shop, picking sorts out of the tray with a bent pin. Her father had set the boarding house bills in this type for thirty years. Now the type was going to the scrap man in Penzance, and she meant to keep one word of it.

She found the letters one by one: a, d, v, e, n, t, u, r, e. The second e was worn nearly smooth on one side, and the u had lost its serif, so she was sure of them by feel alone. Upstairs the kettle began to knock. Her mother had been saying for a fortnight that the rooms would not let themselves, that nobody came to a town like this to sit still, and Nell had said nothing, because her mother had never once been further than the Lizard.

She laid the sorts in a row on a folded ledger page and tilted the paper to the window. The word ran down the sheet like something climbing a wall. Read from the top it looked like a warning. Read from the bottom it looked like a dare.

When the carrier's cart came for the press at noon, Nell wrapped the nine letters in brown paper and tied them with the red cord from the parcel drawer. She didn't tell her mother what was in it. She walked down the harbour steps and gave the parcel to the ferryman, then stood on the wet stones and watched the boat go out past the breakwater until it was only a mark on the grey.
