Decorative script letter A designs with hearts
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
The sheet shows ten separate calligraphic designs of the capital letter A, each drawn in black ink on white paper. Most include a heart shape worked into or looped through the letter, with swirling entrance and exit strokes and varied thick and thin linework. The designs are arranged in rows with generous spacing, and the image is a clean, evenly lit scan with no body placement shown.

Flour is still on the page, so forgive the smudge. It is twenty to five and the ovens have been going since half three, and the delivery van is idling outside with its lights on, waiting for the tins. I have been trying to write this for a week, and every time I pick up the pen the bread needs turning.

You asked why I still mark the tins with an A. Mam started it, with the brass stamp she bought off a sign-writer in Hull, and I never had the heart to change it. Last Tuesday the stamp came loose from its handle, so I took it to the forge behind St Mary's. The smith, who has hands like shovels, bent the tail of the letter round into a little loop, the way Mam used to finish her As on the shopping list. Then he pressed a heart into the curl with the point of a nail, and charged me four pounds for the privilege.
Now every loaf that leaves here goes out with an A that looks as if it is trying to hold something. Mrs Pryce said at the counter that it looked like a ribbon. I said it was a letter. She said that was the same thing in a bakery, and I did not argue, because she was right and because the rye was catching.
So come home at Easter, Ada. Bring the boys, and bring the good tea, not that dust you buy in Leeds. The van is here and I have to go and shift the batch before the oven cools. Your loving sister, Nell.
