Dearest Ada, the captain has made me purser for the rest of this crossing, so I now keep the books of stores, wages and sickness, and I am the only man aboard whose hand is fine enough to write them. Mr Pell says my copperplate would shame a bishop. I told him no bishop has ever had to enter a cask of laudanum beside a cask of lamp oil.

Rain has fallen for nine days off the Horn, grey as a ledger page, and the water casks swelled until the steward swore the fresh water tasted of tar. The law on this ship is the captain's word and the mate's fist, and between the two I have learned that trust is spent like coin and never refunded. Last Thursday the cook came to me with a stoppered jar he had found behind the flour, labelled in a hand none of us knew, and asked whether it was poison or magic. I said the difference is only in who signs for it.

I took the jar to the captain. He read the label twice, put it in his coat, and told me to write nothing. So I wrote nothing. I wrote the wages, the flour and the tallow, and in the sickness column, where the surgeon wants a cause, I left a clean line. Power, Pell calls it, the thing a man keeps by knowing what not to say.

Tonight the rain stopped and the stars came out so thick over the bowsprit that the watch went quiet. I have ruled a fresh page at the back of the book and begun it with the one word I can still write without a lie. Star. Watch for my next letter, and do not tell Mother about the jar.
