Dear Tom, you'll not believe what came up the service road on Thursday. A doe, bold as the bailiffs, stepped over the bins behind Ashgrove House and stood under the lamp outside number four as if she'd been booked for the evening. Mrs Okafor from the fourth floor said she'd seen her twice before, always near the tubs of peonies Edie Pruitt planted before she went into the home.

The peonies are out now, huge things, heavy as fists, pink going brown at the edges. Someone had threaded a string of pearl-white beads through the deer's collar, and it swung when she turned her head. Nobody will own up to it. Mrs Okafor reckons Edie, which is daft, but I didn't say so. The little midges hung in clouds round her ears, and the council man with the strimmer switched it off and just watched.
Then she walked slowly along the planters, nosing each bloom as if she were checking the price, and went back the way she came, out past the bins and over the wall into the railway cutting. The beads were left on the bench where she'd stood, and nobody could bring themselves to pick them up.
I stood at the window until the light went, and I think I'd like to be that unbothered about leaving. Come up at the weekend and I'll show you the beads. They're still on the bench. Love, Nell.
