The rain had been coming down on Saltergate market since before the stalls were up, and Mabel Quayle was still fighting her tarpaulin when the horse came up the cobbles with a horn on its brow like a bent nail and a lily tucked behind one ear. Nobody else looked twice. The fishmonger went on shouting about cod. A boy with a barrow of turnips kept his head down. Only Mabel, who had sold lilies for forty years and knew a bad bloom from a good one, put down her knife.

"You'll be wanting the white ones," she said, because it seemed rude to say nothing. The creature lowered its head over her crate, and its mane, which hung in long wet strands like willow, dripped onto the buckets. It did not speak. It breathed on the lilies, slowly, the way a grandmother breathes on a window to write her name, and every bloom in the crate opened at once, pale and heavy, in the grey light.
Mabel had a debt. Her husband, Tom, had owed the Harrow brothers money for a boat that sank in March, and they had said they would take the stall in payment on Friday. She had been lying awake over it for weeks. She said nothing of this. The unicorn took the lily from behind its own ear and pressed it into her palm with its soft grey muzzle, then turned and walked back down the hill toward the river, leaving hoofprints that filled slowly with rain.
On Friday the Harrow brothers came with their ledger and found the stall full of blooms nobody had planted. Mabel sold every one by noon, and the brothers went away counting their coins in the wet. That evening she sat at the kitchen table with the single lily in a jam jar, still open, still smelling of the river, and she did not water it.
