Hairless cat profile with blossom sprigs

Neo-trad · Black and grey · Flash

A line drawing on paper of a hairless cat's head in profile, facing left, with its eye, nose and whiskers shaded in soft greys. A cluster of five-petalled blossoms and leaves rises along the left side of the cat. The design is entirely black and grey, with bold outlines and smooth shading across the cat's head and the flower petals.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit yourself down by the range, and mind the bucket, because the dust in this village gets into the bread and the stories alike. I'll tell you about Mab Turnbull's cat, the one with no hair on her at all, not a whisker to speak of, only a face like a wrinkled glove and eyes that could shame a deacon.

Every spring, when the cherry on the far side of the spoil heap broke into flower, that cat went up the tip with her tail like a question mark. Nobody dared follow her. The men said the slag was hot underneath and would take a boot clean off. She came back each dusk with a sprig of blossom gripped in her teeth, five petals to a flower, and laid it on the step of the chapel house where the pit wives sat with their hands in their laps.

The winter the colliery shut, Mab took to her bed and the cat stopped going up the tip. The blossom stopped too. The village went quiet in the way a clock does when someone forgets to wind it. Then one March the cat was gone two days, and when she came down the spoil she was frost to the ears with nothing on her to hold the cold off.

Mab's grandson carried the sprig to the bedside. Mab smelled it, and smiled for the first time since the cage stopped. Some say the cat had found the old orchard path under the rubble and walked it all the way to the sun. I say she only wanted somebody to look up. Drink your tea now, and mind the grit.
