Sketchy cat with a red flower on a thigh
Fine line · Thigh · Mixed · Photo
A cat sits beside a teacup and saucer, with a long tail curling up behind it and a loose, red flower splashed across its shoulder area. The linework is sketchy and overlapping, with grey shading that gives the cat a textured, pencil-drawn look. The red ink is the only colour, set against greyscale and skin tones, and the design fills the outer thigh in a vertical composition.

The petrol needle has been lying to you since Coyote Wells, and the only light for fifty miles is the sign for the Sallow Creek café, buzzing pink over a door that sticks. Inside, the fan turns slowly and nobody comes to the counter. On the bench under the window sits a grey cat, loose in its outline, as if the desert sun had sketched it quickly and meant to go back and fill it in later. Beside it a teacup waits on a saucer, full and cold.

You sit down opposite the cat because there is nowhere else. It does not look at you so much as through you, one ear turned towards the road. After a while a woman comes in from the yard, wiping her hands on a cloth, an ocotillo bloom tucked behind one ear. Her name, she says, is Ora Pell, and she pours you a cup you did not ask for.
"Eleven years that cat's kept this bench," she says, sliding the saucer closer. "It never drinks a drop. It just likes to watch who does. Drivers who sit longer than they need to are the ones who get the good roads."
The cat's tail lifts from the floor and curls up behind it like a question mark. You drink the tea, which is strong and far too sweet, and the cat watches every mouthful. When you leave, you put a coin in the empty saucer, and Ora nods as though you have passed a test you did not know you were sitting. The bloom has fallen onto the step. In the mirror the café shrinks to a pink smudge, and the grey cat is still watching the road.
