Compass star and pink flowers on a shoulder
Neo-trad · Shoulder · Colour · Photo
A colour tattoo on the shoulder and upper arm shows a yellow eight-point compass star set within a grey and black circular medallion, with a red and white central flower. Pink five-petalled blossoms, buds and dark green leaves spread around the star and down the arm. The linework is bold and dark, with soft shading on the petals and leaves, and the design is arranged in a clustered composition that follows the curve of the shoulder.

"Trees forgive a crooked line for about five years," he used to say. "Then they hold it against you."

She found the needle sticking on the third morning of picking, stopped at the wild rose hedge that marked the boundary, and swore softly at it. The rose had come up through the wire again. Its pink flowers were already going over into hips, orange as glass lamps, and the wasps were drunk on the windfalls rotting in the grass. Dev from the next farm lifted a hand across the fence and shouted that the Bramleys were ready. She shouted back that she was not.
Later, she sat on an upturned crate at the end of Row Nine with the compass open on her knee and the lid propped against a box of Cox's. The needle swung, shivered and settled. North was exactly where her grandfather had said it would be, behind the church tower, behind everything. She shut the case, pocketed it, and went back to the ladder with the day's first real apple cold in her palm from the shade.
