Deer skull with antlers on the thigh
Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a deer skull with long, branching antlers, drawn in thin black outline with light stippled shading on the bone. The linework is delicate and even, and the skull fills the centre of the composition with the antlers sweeping up and out to the left. The image is a close crop of pale skin with a soft, neutral background and a white frilled garment at the top.

The stag had walked into the village three winters running, and each time the men of Harrow Ford went out with their spears and came back with nothing but wet boots. Oswy the cooper said it was the same beast, grown old and clever. His wife Hild said that was nonsense, set the porridge on the fire and told the children to keep the door barred.

On the fourth morning Hild went out to the birch wood herself, carrying a loaf wrapped in linen. She found the stag standing where the stream bent, his antlers branching higher than the alders. He did not run. She set the bread on a flat stone and sat down on the bank to wait, because her mother had taught her that a creature which will not run is owed a hearing.
What he wanted was not bread. He wanted the men to stop cutting the birches that sheltered the does, and the children to stop throwing stones at the fawns. Hild carried his words back down the hill. The men grumbled, but Oswy took his axe to the wood and came home without it. By midwinter the snow had buried the stream, and the village flocks were fatter than they had been in years.
When the thaw came, Hild walked back to the bend and found a skull lying on the stone where she had left the loaf. The bone was clean and the antlers were pale as birch bark. She did not carry it home. She left it where it lay, and the young trees grew up around it, and nobody in Harrow Ford has cut a birch on that bend since.
