Blue stag head on upper arm
Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A blue tattoo of a stag's head with branching antlers, the features built up from soft, blended shading with some fading at the edges. The ink is a single blue tone, and the design sits on the upper arm with a faint wisp of shading trailing below the head. The photograph is taken outdoors, with a patterned sleeve on the left and leafy greenery behind the arm.

Halvard Mees had been counting the stag for three days before the customs officer asked him what he was counting. "Not a stag, exactly," he said, tapping the glass of the observation hut. "Something that walks like one and fades when you look at it straight." The officer, a young man with a cold, wrote nothing down. Below them the pass fell away through larch and grey scree, and the frontier wire ran through it like a bad stitch.

On the fourth morning the stag came down the slope on the wrong side and stopped at the wire. Its antlers were the colour of cold ink in water, branching thin and then thinner until they dissolved into the mist. Each step it took seemed to spread a little, the way a drop of ink does, and the long wisp of its body trailed behind it like smoke that had forgotten to rise. The officer's radio crackled. Halvard was already moving.
He crossed where the fence had rusted through, the way his grandmother had told him the old smugglers did, and found no border on the other side at all, only the same larches, the same scree, and a line of hoofprints filling slowly with fog. He followed them for an hour. The stamp in his passport, when he finally returned to the hut at dusk, had come out as a pale blue smudge with no country printed beside it. The officer studied it for a long time, then studied Halvard, and then, very carefully, pressed his own palm against the stamp and held the print up to the window to watch the light come through.
