Upside-down cat on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo of a cat shown upside down, with its legs stretched upwards and its tail hanging down. The cat has soft, shaded greys and darker tones on the ears, paws and tail, with fine detail in the face and fur. The arm rests against a white lace garment on a plain grey background.

By the third waltz the cat had claimed the rafters again, and Mr Oakes was out on the pier with a broom and a face like thunder. You know the sound she makes when she's happy up there, a low chirrup like a kettle thinking about it. Nobody at the Palais on the Esplanade could say how she got up. The beam over the bandstand was a good twenty feet from the nearest chair, and the plaster had cracks you could slip a shilling through.

Her legs were out straight, four pale paws pointed at the ceiling roses, and her tail hung down over the dancers like a bell rope nobody dared pull. The couples turned beneath her in their hired blue suits and borrowed frocks. Nobody looked up except the girl who swept the floor between sets, Marjorie Pell, with chalk on her shoes, who had decided the cat was the only sensible creature in the building.
Marjorie stopped sweeping when the band broke for the interval. She climbed the stepladder by the cloakroom, and the cat looked down at her with the calm of someone who had seen everything the right way up and found it overrated. "Come on, then," Marjorie said, and held up her hands. The cat let go all at once, twisted in the air like a dropped glove, and landed square on the boards with a soft thump nobody heard over the clatter of cups.
Later, when the last waltz had emptied the hall and the lights clicked off one by one, Marjorie found the cat curled on her coat in the cloakroom. Mr Oakes said it was a daft thing, climbing for a cat. She said nothing. From up there she had seen the whole ballroom turned over like a cup on a saucer, and for one long breath it had looked as though everyone down below was the one hanging on.
