Desert landscape across both calves
Blackwork · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
Two legs seen from behind show a continuous desert landscape in black ink, with a rising sun and rays above layered mountains and a tall cactus. Solid black bands and fine horizontal lines frame the scene at the top and bottom, with clouds drawn in the upper section. The design is entirely black and grey on pale skin, set against a weathered wooden fence and gravel ground.

The sun came up over Harrow Flat at twenty to six, the way it had every morning since we pegged the line, and Ada Quill swore it was the only honest thing in the county. She had her pen out before the first ray cleared the ridge. The board wanted the horizon drawn true, and a horizon inked after breakfast, she said, is a horizon that has been talked into something.

Our work was stripes. Every mile we laid a band of black across the sheet: the road, the dry wash, the long low bench of cloud that sat on the peaks like a lid on a pan. Ada inked the sun last, a dark disc with its rays fanned out like the spokes of a cart wheel, and she never let me touch it. "You'd give it a face," she said. "Sun doesn't have a face. It has a job."
In April the board sent a man named Pell to check our figures. He stood on the bench with his hat in his hand and counted the saguaro we had drawn, one tall arm lifted on the left side of the page, and then he counted the real ones, which were none. "There's no cactus out here," he said. Ada didn't look up from her ink. "There will be once it's drawn," she said, and she carried on lining the mountains, sharp and angular, until the paper went dark at the edges.
Pell left on the noon coach and wrote a report that nobody in the county ever read. The following winter the rains came early and rough, and when the wash ran, a seedling stood up in the gravel exactly where the cactus was inked, green and stubborn as a question. I still have the sheet. I hold it to the window at dawn until the rays line up with the real thing, and the drawn road runs out somewhere past the cactus, where I have not yet been brave enough to follow it.
