Traditional leg and ankle tattoos on bare legs

Traditional · Calf · Colour · Photo

A standing figure is shown from the knees down on a wooden floor in front of a black and white geometric rug. A bold, colour tattoo runs down the outer calf of one leg with a dagger, flowers and a bird among other motifs, and each ankle carries a smaller circular ornamental design. The bold outlines and solid fills of red, green, yellow and blue ink suggest a traditional style, and the framing keeps the focus on the tattoos.

The big top has sagged since the spring rain, and the canvas over the ring smells of wet rope and paraffin. You stand at the edge of the sawdust with a tin of brass polish in one hand and the knife case in the other, counting the rivets on the ticket booth, because Mr Okafor has said the Tuesday matinee is off and you are not to tell the children until the posters come down.

He taught you the throw the way his own father taught him: the blade turns once, twice, and the board with the painted swallow on it must always be the thing that gets struck. That swallow is older than either of you. Its wings have faded to the colour of weak tea and the red at its breast has run into the grey, but the knife still lands where it always landed, and he still says the bird does not care who is holding the handle.

On the last night the lights go down early because the generator is coughing. You walk the length of the caravans with a lantern, past the wagon with the rose garland painted on its door and the tent where the bearded lady keeps her sewing box, and you hear Okafor counting coins inside his trailer, slow and quiet, the way a man counts when he already knows the total.

In the morning you open the big top and find the ring full of wildflowers, pushed up through the sawdust in red and yellow and blue, as though the ground had decided to put on a show of its own. You pack the knives into their case one at a time, wrap the swallow board in an old blanket, and leave the flowers standing for whoever comes next.
