Desert landscape line drawing

Fine line · Black and grey · Flash

A black ink drawing of a desert scene on cream paper. Thin, even outlines form a range of mountains, several cactus and plant shapes along the base, a small star and a solid filled circle, with a single arc above the peaks. The composition is sparse and centred, with plenty of empty paper around the motifs and no shading or colour.

The night shift at the Piedra Blanca crossing always ran slow until the sky started to thin over the ridge. Teodora Vance kept her torch on the fence line, where a single joshua tree stood in the scrub with its heads of pale blooms, lit up like a row of lamps someone had forgotten to switch off. Her relief was late again. The barrier arm hung still above the empty lane, and the mountains behind it were nothing but a black fold against black.

At ten past four a rusted estate car rolled up, its headlights yellow and tired. The driver was an old man called Abel Quintero, who had a paper bag of cuttings wrapped in damp newspaper on the passenger seat. She asked him what he was carrying. He said his wife's cacti, three pads from the garden at Los Ojos, and a packet of seeds for the grandchildren. The form was clear about plant material. She looked at the newspaper, dated 1987, and at his hands on the wheel, which did not shake.

She read the form twice, then tore off the carbon copy and wrote in the box marked other: dried seed, personal, for planting. She stamped it hard enough to feel it through the desk. Abel thanked her in a voice that expected nothing, and she realised she had been holding her breath since he pulled in.

When the barrier lifted, the sun was already a solid disc sitting on the peaks, the same colour as the old man's tin of seeds. The estate car pulled away towards the pale road, and Teodora stood at the window until its tail lights were gone, the joshua tree still glowing behind her in the grey.
