UFO beam over a mountain landscape
Black and grey · Flash
A black line drawing of a flying saucer with a beam of light falling onto a triangular scene of mountains, a crescent moon, three stars and a small house with chimney smoke. Pine trees sit on the left and right, and a hill at the bottom is filled with wavy parallel lines. The bold, even monoline work is solid black on a pale background, with the composition contained inside a large triangle.

The thing came down over the Keld Pass at twenty past two. I know the time because I was copying it into the night log when my pen stopped halfway through the word nil. Nothing had come through the barrier since the lorry from Carlisle at midnight, and the only light on the whole road was our cottage, its chimney going because Dorothy insists on a fire even in June.

It hung above the ridge like a dinner plate balanced on one finger, with two little antennae that wobbled as if they were tasting the air. Then a beam spilled from its belly, pale as skimmed milk, and walked down the slope towards us the way a man walks towards a dog he doesn't know. The crescent moon looked suddenly embarrassed. Three stars blinked in the corner, out of step with one another, and the hill beyond the fence rippled in its wavy black stripes as if someone had brushed the grass the wrong way.
Dorothy came out in her dressing gown carrying the tin of shortbread we keep for drivers who've had bad news. She looked up, then at me, and said, "Well, they've finally sent someone to check our papers." I told her they'd want the stamp. She went back in for it.
The beam touched our chimney and the smoke bent towards it, rising in a neat spiral, and somewhere far above us a voice I couldn't understand asked, very politely, for the register of who was staying here. I wrote it down. Name, nationality, purpose of crossing. Under purpose I wrote home.
