Mountains and daisies in a vine wreath
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
A circular wreath of thin vines and leaves frames three shaded mountain peaks at the lower edge, with three daisy-like flowers clustered at the lower left. The linework is fine and uses hatching to suggest shadow on the mountains, with the petals and leaves outlined in single strokes. The drawing is black ink on a plain white background, with open space in the centre of the wreath.

Nell had been living on the barge for three weeks before the river finally let her see the hills. The Carrow gave way to a narrower cut, the banks crowded with alder and nettle, and the towpath dropped into shadow. She stood at the tiller with her hip pressed against the beam, because the rope had gone stiff in the damp, and watched three grey peaks rise over the water as if they were waiting for her to notice.

Her cargo was forty jars of blackcurrant jam for a grocer in Ludlow, packed in straw that still smelled of the orchard, and a letter from her brother Tom that she had not yet opened. He had written it from the lock house at Hebden, where he had stayed on after their father died. She had read the first line on the first day and folded the page back into her coat. Every mile since, the envelope had seemed heavier.
At the bend below the peaks, a willow leaned over the water with a ring of vine hung from its lowest branch, the leaves turned silver by the wind. Tom had made rings like that as a boy, bending green whips into circles for their mother's door. Nell brought the barge in against the bank, looped the wreath over the bow cleat, and sat on the hatch with the letter in her lap.
She read it through once, slowly. Then she tore the page in half, let the wind take one piece over the reeds, and tucked the other into the vine where the stems curled round. The mountains kept their watch over the water, and the barge drifted on with its small green ring turning at the bow.
