Destroy what destroys you lettering on a wrist
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of the inner wrist and lower forearm showing the words 'DESTROY WHAT DESTROYS YOU' in black, uppercase, slightly uneven block lettering set over two lines. The ink is solid and fairly fine, with the letters sitting on the skin's natural creases. The dark background and grey knit sleeve cuff keep the focus on the text, which is shown in soft, low-contrast black and grey tones.

The snow has sealed the pass since Tuesday, and you have been at the Hollin Gate inn long enough to know which floorboard complains by the stairs. Mrs Abernathy has given you the back room because you are the only guest who never asks for the fire to be built higher. Outside, the drifts reach the first-floor sills, and the lamps in the yard have gone blue with frost.

On the third night you find the ledger under the bar, the old one with the cracked green cover. Most of it is bread counts and the names of drovers long dead. But on the flyleaf someone has written in a tidy, sloped hand: destroy what destroys you. Beneath it sits a column of figures, a debt struck through three times, and a date eleven winters back. You turn the book in the lamplight and wonder whether the sentence was a warning or a bargain.
Mrs Abernathy comes in with the kettle and sees the book open on your knees. She does not take it from you. She sits on the settle, unpins her hair, and tells you the hand belonged to her brother, who ran the inn before the avalanche took the north road and the bank took the rest. "He thought words were tools," she says. "He kept them the way other men kept knives."
In the morning the thaw has not come, but the plough has, grinding up the lane. You leave the ledger on the bar with the flyleaf facing up. Beside the pen you set the coin you found pressed between the pages, the one with the bank's name punched clean through it, and you walk out into the white without looking back at the window.
