Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of the inner wrist showing the words Just believe in thin, flowing black script. The lettering is finely lined with soft shading, and a silver beaded bracelet sits just above the tattoo. The monochrome image is framed tightly on the wrist against a dark background.

Ruth had been selling secondhand fountain pens under the awning at Kirkgate for nineteen years, and in all that time the rain had never once stopped a customer from haggling. Today it came sideways off the Pennines and drummed on the tarpaulin like someone impatient to be let in. "Found this in the bin by your pitch," he said. "Thought you'd want it, Mrs Hale."
It was a page torn from a notebook, the ink bled by water. Someone had written the same two words across the top in a looping hand, again and again, the way children practise their letters: Just believe, Just believe, Just believe. Underneath, in a steadier pen, was a single line: Tell Ruth the nib is still good.
She laughed, then stopped, because the nib was indeed still good. It was a Waterman she had sold at the spring fair to a woman with a laugh like a kettle, who had said she was off to write to her sister in Canada and wanted something that wouldn't skip on the long words. Ruth folded the page into her apron pocket and let the rain do what it liked. Then she unlocked the glass case, took out a bottle of blue-black ink, and wrote a reply on the back of a receipt in her neat capitals: THE NIB IS STILL GOOD. SO ARE YOU. She tucked it into an envelope and, when the man with the Parker had gone, she went to find the post box at the end of the arcade.
