Detroit Muscle engine with flames on upper back
Traditional · Back · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows a V8 engine with exposed valve covers and manifolds, flanked on both sides by orange and red flames. The words DETROIT MUSCLE sit in an arc above the engine and a ribbon banner beneath it reads EST 1985. Solid black outlines and grey shading define the engine, while the flames and banner carry the colour against a brown skin tone.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Dolores Kowalczyk wiped her hands on a rag that had given up being white around 1979 and told her nephew the block needed another hour to cool before anybody touched the valve covers. Ray didn't listen. He never listened once the engine was running, and he sat on an upturned crate with the bay door rolled up while the exhaust drifted out over Joseph Campau Street like a promise nobody had asked for.

The engine had come out of a two-door that died on the Lodge Freeway in the winter of 1985. Dolores bought the wreck for four hundred dollars from a man who cried when he signed the title, and she spent the next months pulling it apart on newspaper spread across the concrete. Every manifold, every bolt and bracket went into a coffee tin with a date scrawled on masking tape. Ray thought it was madness. She said a man who could not name his own parts had no business pretending to build anything.
He asked her once why the banner said est 1985 when the shop was older than that. She told him the year was when she first heard that engine catch, standing in her father's yard with a sandwich in one hand and nothing in the other but hope. Ray nodded like he understood, then went quiet for a long time.
When she finally lifted the hood and let the air in, Ray was already reaching for the warm metal with his bare palm. Dolores counted the tins on the shelf, then counted them again. One was missing, and it was the one with his name on the tape.
