Blue classic car with flames on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A detailed blue classic car, shown in side profile with chrome wheels and lowered stance, sits across the forearm. Orange and yellow flames wrap around it and fade into the skin, while smooth shading gives the bodywork and glass a glossy, three-dimensional look. The arm fills most of the frame against a dark t-shirt with a white graphic, and the tattoo is the clear focus.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The coupe had been under a tarpaulin since the August the mill shut, and Ray Hollis pulled the cover off at eleven at night because he could not sleep and the paint still looked wet under the strip light. Blue like a gas ring's heart. He had sprayed it himself, the flames last, licked up from the wheel arches in orange and yellow that his wife said looked like the fire brigade had got lost on the way to somewhere else.

He had raced it twice in his twenties at the old strip near Hatfield, and lost both times to a Ford he still hated by name. The third time, with the bank's letter folded in his top pocket, he ran it at dusk and killed the headlamps for the first hundred yards, because a man with nothing left to lose can see well enough in the dark. The wheels found their grip. The chrome caught the last of the light off the slag heaps and threw it back at him like a wink.

The timing board at the far end read 11.2. Nobody cheered. Ray sat with the engine ticking and watched the flames in the windscreen reflection, and understood the car had never really been for winning. He drove it home at a sensible thirty and parked it nose to the shutter, and it never left the lock-up again.

In the morning a man from Leeds will come with a flatbed and a cheque. He wants it for a showroom. Ray tells him to let the paint cure properly before he takes it out in the rain, and to keep an eye on the orange, because it always runs first.
