Street scene with shop signs across abdomen
Realism · Other · Mixed · Photo
A large tattoo covers the abdomen with a city street receding into perspective, lined with shopfronts, billboards, a tall building and a traffic light. Shading is soft and grey with smooth blends, giving a photographic, dimensional effect. Warm reddish tones appear on the left side, while the centre and right are mainly greys.

Maud Okonedo had been hanging letters over Carrow Street for thirty-one years, and on the last Friday of March she climbed the ladder outside the Lyceum Arcade with a tin of gold size and a brush worn down to a stub. The street below was already half-boarded. Someone had unbolted the traffic light from its arm, and a lorry idled at the kerb with its engine running.

The sign she had come to fix was the old Young Money Bank fascia on the upper storey, its gilt gone to dull brass. Her father had hung it in 1962 from a cradle of scaffold poles, and he had taught her to paint the serifs first, because a sign that looked right in the workshop could still look wrong from the far pavement. She worked the curl of the Y while the wind pushed at her sleeves and a boy on a bicycle shouted up to ask her the time.
The developers wanted the frontage kept for their brochure, lit from behind, the lettering rebuilt in vinyl that would never need a brush. Maud had refused the job in January and accepted it in February, when the rent on her own shop doubled. Now she sat with the brush hovering over the final stroke and did not want to finish.
She finished anyway. From the top of the ladder she could see the whole avenue narrowing towards the station, every board and shutter and window lettered by somebody's hand, and she thought her father would have called it a fair street to leave. She dipped the brush, drew the last stop after the word BANK, and came down before the light changed.
