Diamond on a chain bracelet tattoo

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A small grey diamond or gem shape sits on the back of the wrist, joined to a thin chain-link line that wraps around the wrist like a bracelet. The linework is fine and mostly unshaded, with light grey tones inside the gem. The pale skin and textured blue-grey fabric behind the hand keep the composition simple and focused on the tattoo.

Mrs Okafor had left the chain on the counter for eleven minutes before she asked about the stone, and Ruth Ashdown knew by then that the chain was not what she cared about. Ruth turned the bracelet under the lamp. Fine links, the sort a girl in Hockley might have bought from a market stall in 1974 and worn until the clasp gave out. The stone was not a diamond. Ruth had known it from the first glance, the way it took the light in one flat grey plane instead of a hundred small sparks.

"My mother always said it was real," the woman said.

"Your mother was probably right about plenty," Ruth said, and then felt a little ashamed, because the woman laughed as if she had been waiting all morning for somebody to say something honest.

Ruth wrote the ticket in her careful hand: one chain, white metal, one stone, tested as glass, forty pounds offered. Then she did the thing her father had taught her in this same narrow shop, which was to put the bracelet back into the customer's palm rather than into the tray. "Wear it a week before you decide," she said. "See how it sits when you're not thinking about it."

The woman fastened it on her wrist without looking, the way people do with things they have worn for years. The grey stone caught the lamp once, dimly, and then she closed her hand over it and the bell above the door rang as she went out into the rain.
