Tribal pattern on the back of a hand
Blackwork · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A clenched hand shows a black tribal-style tattoo of swirling spirals and angular bands running from the wrist across the back of the hand. The linework is bold and solid with some fine dotted shading, all in black ink with no colour. The plain grey background and red clothing sit behind the hand, and a gold bracelet with a red accent sits on the wrist.

The wind backed to the north on the ninth day out, and Aunt Ilse, who had navigated the Brindle Star for thirty years without once consulting the stars, held her left hand up to the lamp and said they were a finger's width too far east. Nobody argued. Her hand had been marked since she was a girl, black lines running from wrist to knuckle, and every ridge of it was a current she had learned by feel.

The marks had been cut in by old Mother Parrow on the quay at Skerrow, who charged a shilling a line and never let anyone watch. Ilse sat still for three nights while the needle hummed. The spirals were eddies off the Bone Shoals, the hooked band was the long swell that ran under the storm roads, and the dotted shading was the places where the bottom came up close enough to smell. Her mother had told her that if the sea ever forgot the way home, the hand would remember it for her.
On the tenth night the lookout called out a light low on the water, steady and pale. Ilse did not look at it. She turned her hand to the lamp, traced the hooked band with her thumb, and gave the course. The mate wanted to argue. She told him the sea was a letter written in a hand he could not read, and she had paid a shilling a line to learn it. At dawn they raised the harbour wall at Skerrow, and the light turned out to be only gulls, wheeling over the boats that had come out to meet them.
