Watercolour fox with flower crown on a wrist
Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A seated fox wearing a crown of pink flowers is the main subject, with a cluster of blue and purple flowers beside it. The fox is rendered in soft, painterly shading with orange, brown and cream tones, and the flowers have loose, blended edges. The tattoo sits on the inner wrist and forearm against a plain white background and a grey sleeve.

You have the ovens lit by four and flour settling on the zinc counter when the fox first slips under the back door. She sits beside the proving drawers as if she has paid rent, a crown of pink blossom caught over her ears, and she watches you with the patience of someone who knows bread is coming. Mrs Okonedo from the flat above swears she has seen the same fox at the bins since spring, always wearing something new on her head.

You tear the heel off the first batch of rye and set it on the flagstones. She does not eat it at once. She turns it over with one paw, considers it, then picks it up and carries it out across the yard, past the blue and purple hydrangeas that spill over the wall, while the sky above the slate roofs goes the colour of weak tea. You follow as far as the step. She stops by the bush, sets the crust down between two blooms, and looks back at you as though you have been unforgivably slow.
The next morning there is a paper bag folded on the step. Inside are two copper coins, a bramble leaf, and a crown of pink petals pressed flat between sheets of greaseproof paper. You never learn whose hand made it. You only know that the oven timer went off early that day, and nobody in the shop minded at all.
