Dear Marian,

The slab came up the hill on Tuesday in a borrowed fishmonger's cart, because the museum van had broken down at the bottom of Gull Lane and nobody would wait. Mr Haddow from the harbour office swore it was the heaviest thing he had carried since the lifeboat's anchor, and he may be right. Inside the plaster jacket, wrapped in wet sacking, lies a meat-eater of some sort, the length of a rowing boat, with its jaw hanging open like a man mid-sentence.

I have spent three days with a dental pick and a paintbrush working the rock off its skull. The bones came out grey and brittle, but where the matrix gave way, the white of the bone looked almost new, as if it had been lying in the cliff only since the spring. The hip and one thigh are still locked in the stone. I have marked the place where the ribs run under the slate with little dotted arrows in pencil, so the next person knows which way the animal was lying when the sea took it.

Last night I walked down to the breakwater with the lamp. The tide was out and the mud shone. I thought about how the creature must have stood on those long toes, claws pressed into a river bank that is now a car park behind the chapel. Nobody will ever see its colour. We only get the outline.

Come at Easter if you can. I will show you the tail, which runs nearly the full length of the cart and ends in a point as fine as a fishhook. Bring your good boots, and do not let Father talk you into carrying the crate.

Love, Hen
