A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

My father never drew a curve in his life. He said the seam did not care for them, and neither did the men who paid for the props. So when the new overman asked for a sign to hang above the lamp room, Dad sat at the kitchen table with a steel rule and a stub of carpenter's pencil and made a bear out of straight lines, the way you might fold a bit of paper into a bird.

It was that bear that got us through the wet winter of 1961. The panels on its back lined up with the old roadways on the plan in the office, and Dad swore the joint where the shoulder met the ribs marked the exact place the top coal thinned out. Nobody believed him until the drift was cut along that line and the coal came away clean as slate.

The overman had the sign painted black on white and fixed it over the cage gate. I walked under it every morning with my snap tin and my lamp, counting the facets to see if I could still find the bear's forefoot in the dark. Some mornings I could not. Some mornings the outline seemed to turn its head the other way, towards the hill where the old shafts were.

When the pit closed I took the rule down from its nail and kept it. Dad's bear hangs on the back of the kitchen door now, and at noon the sun comes through the window and lays its shadow straight across the threshold. I still measure what matters to me against those lines.
