Stylised goat line drawing

Fine line · Black and grey · Flash

A single continuous black line forms a stylised goat with a swept, curled horn, a closed eye and a long neck that loops into a spiral. The tail ends in two pointed leaf or fin shapes filled solid black. The design is set on a plain white background, with no shading and no colour.

Sit closer, the lot of you, and mind the sawdust, it gets into everything, even the bread. You want the goat? Everyone wants the goat. Old Marrow's Travelling Wonders had a goat called Pell with a horn that swept back like a wave going over, and a neck she could coil round herself three times when she was bored.

The show was dying by then. The big top had holes like a cheese, the lions had gone to a farm in Lincolnshire, and the ringmaster drank his tea from a flask he swore was brandy. Only Pell still did her turn. Every night she climbed the pyramid of barrels, folded her neck into that loop, and sat with her eyes shut as though the crowd was a sea she was content to ignore. The tail she kept for the finale, two fins of dark leaf that she flicked at the boy who fed her.

The boy was Tobias Quill, twelve, and he had a plan. The takings had gone on coal and rope, so he would take Pell to the pier at Whitby, where the old showmen said the sea-goats came in on the tide. Nobody believed him. Pell certainly did not. On the last night he led her down to the shingle in the dark, and she stood with the water at her hooves for a long time, horn lifting toward the lighthouse.

In the morning the caravan was gone and the boy was sitting on the wall, dry as a biscuit, with a curl of salt-white horn in his palm. Pell was out past the breakwater, her tail fins cutting the grey water, and she did not look back once. That is the trouble with goats, my dears. They always know which way the sea is.
