Dog portrait in a flower wreath on a shoulder

Fine line · Shoulder · Colour · Photo

A small tattoo of a fluffy cream-coloured dog's face, looking forward, sits within a wreath of green leaves and pink, orange and purple flowers. The linework is fine and the fur is softly shaded in greys and beige, with the florals in brighter colour. The tattoo is centred on the upper arm near the shoulder against a dark background, with the subject's face out of frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Pudding had the best seat in the Gilded Lantern, which was the top of the cloakroom counter, wedged between the brass hat pegs and the tin of raffle tickets. Ada had given up telling him to get down. He sat with his fluffy cream head held high, watching each coat go onto a hook as though he were checking the tickets himself, and the dancers on the sprung floor beyond the curtain paid him more attention than the band.

The spring ball was the night Walter Hobday asked her to foxtrot. He had asked three times before, always by the pegs, always with his cap in both hands, and always Ada had said she was on duty. This time he didn't ask. He simply stood there while the band played 'Blue Moon', and Pudding, who had never once in four years left his post, slid off the counter, trotted round the end of it and sat squarely on Walter's good brown shoes.

Walter laughed so hard he had to sit on the bench by the umbrella stand. When he got his breath back he said he would take that as a yes, and Ada, who had been counting the hours until the ball ended, found she was already untying her apron. Mrs Pettifer could mind the coats for one dance. Pudding came too, trotting ahead to the edge of the floor and turning round every few steps to check they were following.

The committee had pinned a ring of paper roses to the cloakroom door for the competition, and at midnight somebody lifted it off and hung it round Pudding's neck with a length of red ribbon. He wore it like a crown all the way home, and Ada never did take it off him, not even on the Saturdays when the Lantern was closed and the three of them walked the pier in the dark.
