Circular floral tattoo on shoulder blade
Botanical · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A close view of a person's upper back and shoulder shows a black tattoo within a circular frame, filled with stylised lotus-like flowers, leaves and scrolling forms. The linework is solid and bold, with flat black fill and no shading or grey tones. The pale skin contrasts strongly with the dark background, and the tattoo sits centrally on the shoulder blade.

By the third week of September the big top had developed a sag over the north ring, and the rain came through it in ropes. Mr Pascoe wanted the centre pole capped with the old emblem before the Margate fair, so I stood on a step ladder with a tin of black enamel gone thick as treacle and worked a circle of lotus heads round a disc of ash. I thinned the paint with paraffin and let the petals come off the brush the way my father taught me to letter a lifeboat's name, one stroke, no going back.

There was less of everything that year. Dolly the elephant had gone to a farm in Wales, the trapeze wire had been spliced twice and the band played to whoever was still in the seats, which by August was mostly pigeons. Pascoe counted the takings in the caravan with the door shut, and I heard him say the number out loud, forty-one pounds, as if the figure might change if he said it differently. The lotus medallion was the only thing on the whole show that still looked like it had been made to last.
He sold the big top to a scrap man from Ramsgate in October. The disc was to go to a dealer in Canterbury with the brass fittings, so on the last night I climbed the pole in the dark, eased the ash circle off its pegs and wrapped it in my spare shirt. It lives above my kettle in a flat in Deptford now. When the street lamp comes on through the blind, the black petals throw a shadow across the wall, and I still think of it as the only thing from that season that goes round and round without needing anyone to pay to watch.
