Dreamcatcher tattoo on upper back

Fine line · Back · Mixed · Photo

A small dreamcatcher with a circular woven web, a hanging bead and three feathers is tattooed centred on the upper back. The linework is fine and mostly black, with the feathers shaded in blue and touches of red. The subject is shown from behind against a plain, softly lit background, with the tattoo clearly in focus.

The spider's web was the one thing Marta's grandmother would never let anyone brush from the eaves, and when the frost came early that autumn she took a hoop of willow and a skein of grey thread out to the edge of the birch wood. Nobody in Hollin Cross asked her why. They had stopped asking years before, when the bread still rose for her and the goats still gave their milk.

She wove the web tight, round and round from the rim inward, the way her mother had shown her, leaving a small hole at the heart for the bad dreams to fall through. From the bottom she hung a single blue bead, the colour of the pond before it freezes, so the dreams would have something bright to look at and forget.

Three feathers were left. A jay's, a heron's, and one from the red hen that had died in July. Marta bound them on with waxed cord and hung the ring from the lowest bough of the oldest birch, where the path bent towards the village. In the low sun the jay's feather turned the blue of a bruise healing, and the hen's went rust at the tip, as if it had been dipped in the evening.

The children found the ring turned to face the houses the next morning, and the baker said the dreams had gone the wrong way round. Marta only shrugged and kept sweeping her step. A dream that has been caught, she knew, will sometimes walk home on its own.
