Donuts and rolling pins on a thigh
Traditional · Thigh · Colour · Photo
The design shows two rolling pins crossed behind a pair of sprinkled donuts, with pink daisy flowers filling the gaps between them. A ribbon banner across the centre reads RATTLE, with BAKE above and a ampersand and ROLL below. Bold black outlines frame the subjects, with red, yellow, green and pink ink used for the fills and shading on a slightly soft skin tone.

The oven on the hauler Marigold Quay has been dying for eleven years, and tonight it finally rattles its last, so you're the one crawling into its guts with a torch clamped in your teeth. Dough proves in the cold bay below while Captain Oduya shouts down the hatch that the Tanvi Reach docks at dawn and nobody aboard has eaten a warm thing since Ceres.

The rolling pins are the only tools nobody argues over. Yours is a hardwood pin that belonged to your grandmother's sister, its pink enamel stripe flaked to rust at both ends. Ludo, the ship's cook, swears by a steel one he dragged out of a salvage crate, and between you the pair have flattened three shifts' worth of dough into rings. The crew dunks them in a bowl of fizzing sugar, and the galley lights go faintly pink.
Rather than fix the oven, you rig the spare reactor's warmth through copper piping and a hand-cranked fan. When the first sprinkled rings come out, they're gold and blistering and smell of something from before the ship was built. Oduya bites one, closes her eyes, and says nothing for a long while.
Then she tears the next ring in half and hands the bigger piece to the engineer, who hasn't smiled since the moon dock closed, and who now chews slowly with sugar on his chin. Ludo looks at you over the top of his steel pin and mouths, told you so.
