Stay lucky horseshoe with flowers
Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A horseshoe sits at the centre of the design, with two ribbon banners reading STAY and LUCKY curling across it. Orange flowers with red centres and green leaves frame the horseshoe, which has red dots along its inner edge. Bold black outlines and flat, solid fills in orange, red, yellow, green and purple give the piece a classic American traditional look.

The grey mare went lame on the Tuesday, three days out of Hexham, and Tomas Brede swore on his mother's grave that he had nailed her shoes true. The fair's ringmaster said a man who swore that hard was hiding something, and docked him a week's wages for the bother. Tomas didn't argue. He sat on the back step of the caravan with a horseshoe in his lap, turning it over until the rust came off on his thumbs.

Old Ada, who ran the coconut shy and read palms for a penny, came out with two mugs of tea and sat down beside him. "That's a lucky one," she said, nodding at the shoe. "Count the nail holes." He counted. Seven, and a hollow where an eighth had been. "Lucky's a thing you keep moving," she said. "Stand still and it goes stale."
So he took the shoe to the forge at the next village, heated it red, and hammered two ribbons out of the spare iron, long and curling, and bent them across the open mouth of the horseshoe. He painted the letters on with the tin of enamel the swing boats used. STAY, he wrote on one. LUCKY on the other. Then he hung it from the mare's stall door and went to bed.
The mare stood sound all the way to Carlisle. Ada never said what she had meant, but she gave Tomas the bunk nearest the stall, and he slept there every night after, with the horseshoe on the door above his head.
