Dory and Just Keep Swimming on a foot

Lettering · Other · Colour · Photo

A cartoon blue tang fish, shaded in blue with yellow fins and a small eye, sits on the left of the foot beside three rising bubbles. The words Just Keep Swimming run in flowing blue script across the top of the foot towards the toes. The fish has soft shading and the lettering is solid blue, shot in close, even light.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit close, you lot, the fire's only good for another hour. This is the tale of Marrowmere, the kingdom under the kelp that no ship has ever found, and of a small blue fish called Tansy who forgot nearly everything she owned.

Tansy forgot her cousins' names by the second spring tide and the road home by the third. What she never forgot was her grandmother's rule, sung out over the reef every morning: when the water goes cold and the stones go grey, keep your fins moving, and follow the bubbles up. Nobody knew why the bubbles rose, only that they always did, round and silver, like breath from a mouth too polite to speak.

Then came the grey tide that dragged the whole reef toward the sunken ferry of the Drowned King, and Tansy was carried past the gardens, past the kelp forests, into water so dim she could not see her own yellow fins. Every fish in Marrowmere wanted to stop when the dark came in. She thought of the rule, though not the words, only the swish of them, and she kicked.

Three bubbles drifted ahead of her, climbing slow as a sigh. She followed them up through the ribs of the wreck, past the rusted hook and the lost anchor, until the light came rippling back and her grandmother's voice was calling from the reef. Tansy never did remember the road home. She remembered the way up, and that was enough to get her there.
