Script quote 'He walks with me' on a foot
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A black script quote, 'He walks with me', runs along the side of a foot, with fine swirling flourishes beneath the letters and a small outlined fish at the end. The lines are smooth and even, with solid black ink and no shading. The skin is pale and the photo shows the foot against a dark, plastic-covered surface.

Dear Mabel, I write this by the last of the tallow, with the scriptorium cold enough to see my breath above the page. The abbot has finally let me finish the psalter for the Lady chapel, and I have made the flourishes run long and loose, the way your husband's cousin taught us, like weed moving in still water.

You will remember Tobias, who brought the eels to the kitchen every Friday. Since my eyes went at Candlemas, he has walked me to the causeway after compline with his lantern held low so I can see the planks. He never talks much. On the ice he would say only left here, Brother, or mind the crack, and I would mind it, and we would reach the gate without a word wasted.
On Tuesday the Lode froze hard in the night, and Tobias went out alone to check his traps. They found him at the sluice with his lantern still lit beneath the water. Brother Osric says the words are an old line from the psalms for the dying, and I wrote them out again this morning on the flyleaf, beneath the abbot's seal, in my best hand: 'He walks with me'. I drew a small fish at the end, the way Tobias used to scratch one on his bucket to mark a good catch.
The page is drying now, and I have left it open on the lectern so the draught can turn it. Each evening I still reach the causeway gate and stop, and I still hear the boards behind me take a step that matches mine. Write to me when the thaw comes. Your loving brother, Aldous.
