Script quote along the top of a foot
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a foot showing a single line of black script lettering that reads Malia 2011, that's what she said, with trailing ellipses. The letters are smooth, evenly weighted and set in a flowing cursive style. The skin is light and the background is a plain dark surface, with the ink as the only colour-neutral focal point and no other colour in the tattoo.

Dear Nan, the net came up on Tuesday with a whole gurnard wrapped round the rope, and Skip said something about the weather, and Eli looked at the fish and said, that's what she said. Nobody laughed. The gurnard didn't either, and it had the best view of the whole thing.

I'm writing from the galley table, which is the only dry bit of the Gannet Girl, so forgive the smudges. Eli has been aboard since the spring of 2011 and he still hasn't learned that a line like that needs a proper run-up. He tried it on Mags the cook the week before, over tea. She set the teapot down very slowly and asked whether he wanted to finish the sentence or go over the side himself.
Then came the blow in March. We lay hove to for two days off the Scillies, everybody sick as dogs, and at three in the morning Eli sat in the wheelhouse with his boots on the heater and told me about his sister's wedding. She'd wanted a fiddler who could only play the same six bars, over and over, and he'd laughed so hard at the memory he couldn't finish the story. We listened to the diesel and the rain for a while. Then he said, very quietly, that's what she said... and left the rest hanging in the wheelhouse like the spray on the glass.
I'll post this at Penzance. Tell Grandad the gurnard went back in the sea, and that it was the funniest thing anyone has done on this boat all year.
