Nell had drawn the route on the back of a takeaway menu, eleven dots and a pair of arrowheads, and pushed it across the table as if it were a dare. Every stop on the night bus, she'd said, and you get off at the end somewhere you've never been. Dev turned the menu over. The dots were neat and evenly spaced, the way she spaced everything, down to the sugar in her tea. Simple was not the word he would have used for a bus at half one in the morning.

They caught the last one from the stop outside the shuttered launderette, the top deck empty except for a man asleep under a folded newspaper. Nell sat at the front and counted under her breath. Streetlights slid across the window in orange pulses, and each time the doors sighed open the air changed, rain one minute, frying onions the next. Dev watched her reflection in the glass rather than the street outside, and wondered when the dots had started to feel like somewhere they had already been instead of somewhere they were going.

At the eleventh stop, beside the canal where the towpath lamps flickered, Nell stood without asking him. The doors folded shut behind her. He pressed his palm to the cold glass and watched her turn, small and lit, then walk along the towpath toward the water.

He did not get off. He stayed on for the length of the last arrowhead, the stop nobody had written on the menu, and let the city roll past until the paper in his pocket felt like the only map he needed.
