Fine line script reading it is well on forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close-up of a forearm carrying the words it is well in thin, black, handwritten-style script, spaced across the skin in a single line. The linework is fine and even, with the letters drawn in a single stroke and little shading. The photo is in natural light against a pale skin tone and a grey garment, with the tattoo as the clear focus.

The guard at Lantern Bridge takes your passport and turns it over twice, as if the back might say something different. He asks the purpose of your journey. You say family. He asks what is in the envelope inside your coat, and you unfold the letter for him, four folds gone soft as cloth.

Your mother wrote on pharmacy paper with a pen she refused to replace. Every letter ran the same way: the weather over the hills, the goats that would not stay behind the wire, the price of salt rising again in the market at Stavel. Then, at the very bottom, small and careful, the same three words she had used since the winter your father was taken to the hospital in the city. It is well. You stopped believing the rest of the letter years ago. You never stopped believing those words.
The guard reads the page slowly, his lips moving a little, the way people read a notice that has been put up in the wrong place. He runs his thumb under the line at the bottom, as though it might come off on his skin. Behind him a lorry idles and somebody sounds a horn twice.
He hands back the passport and the letter together. Then he stamps the page, and the ink goes down clean and dark. "Go on," he says. "It is well," and he is not asking you.
