Two lines of black typewriter-style coordinates tattooed on an upper arm near the shoulder, with a grey top visible below.

Coordinates lettering on upper arm

Lettering · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo is two lines of numerical latitude and longitude coordinates set in a bold, typewriter-style font. The black ink lines are crisp and evenly weighted, with the text running diagonally across the skin. The image is a close, softly focused photograph with a blurred background and warm skin tones, and a grey fabric edge at the bottom of the frame.

Dear Nell, Forgive the typewriter. The ribbon is nearly spent and I have no money for another, so you will have to make do with my capitals. You will notice I have sent no news, only numbers. N42°56′35″ W80°17′31″ is the lakeside road outside Port Dover where the lorry lost its axle and we sat nine hours in the rain while Eddie Pryce went looking for a spanner. N40°41′29″ E16°42′57″ is the cellar in Matera where Signor Ruggiero poured us a red so sour the dog would not drink it, and the Colonel wept over his accordion until the candles went out.

You asked in your last letter where we sleep now. The big top went to a scrap merchant in Bari in March, and the elephant went with it, though I will not write about that. Half the company has taken work on the ferries and the other half is waiting for the Colonel to die so they can claim the wagons. I keep the ring crate under my bunk and sleep on it, which the lads think is superstition. It is only that it is the last solid thing I own that has ever been mine.

So here is the last pair, and you will find it easily. It is the third step of Ma's back porch, the one that gives under a boot, where you used to sit with the lamp and wait for the post. Sit there tonight if you can. I will be counting the hours from wherever the ferry drops me, and I will know I am close when the sums come out to that step. Tell the dog I am coming home. Your loving brother, Joe
