Dotwork compass rose design

Dotwork · Black and grey · Flash

A drawing of a compass rose with a four-pointed star at the centre, labelled N, E, S and W at the cardinal points. The star is shaded with solid black and fine linework, and the petals behind it are filled with stippled dots and ornamental curls in a mandala-like pattern. The design is set on a plain white background and uses only black ink and grey tones.

The chart table in the back room of the Hollin Street shop had been Ada's since her uncle's stroke, and she still hadn't found the drawer that stuck. Mr Penrose wanted the old survey of the Mersey approaches redrawn before the council meeting on Thursday, and he wanted the compass rose done in the old manner, with the points filled in dots and curls instead of plain ink. She pinned the sheet flat, weighted the corners with brass dividers, and began with the north point, because north was always where her uncle had started.

It took her three evenings. She stippled the petals one dot at a time, a pen nib dipped and tapped, until her wrist ached and the paper took on the grey of a winter sky over water. The curls were harder. Her uncle had drawn them without a pencil line, flicking the nib in a single turn, and her first attempts looked like tangled wool. On the third night she gave up trying to copy him and let each curl go wherever her hand wanted, and the rose began to look less like his and more like hers.

Penrose came on Thursday morning with his umbrella dripping on the lino and looked at the chart for a long while. Then he laid his finger on the south point, where the black shading ran deepest. "He always said the south was the honest direction," he said. "You can't see anything coming from there, so you'd better know the way." He paid her the full fee in cash and left the chart on the table, its compass turning slowly under the lamp as the damp air moved through the room.
